THE PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE 2008-09 – CON MULCAHY

This year should be interesting in our League, with arch rivals Penryn joining us, together with Hayle, Truro and Saltash. This should help with gate and bar profits. The trick will be, to play to our full potential.

Other good news is that we are staying at the Recreation Ground for the foreseeable future, so we should have a period of stability. Thanks to Paul Stephens, our groundsman, the pitch has never looked better (best playing surface in Cornwall) and with the aid of the Council we hope to tidy up the perimeter of the ground quite soon.

Many thanks to all the Committee who have helped to run the Club over the last year - Minis, Youth Teams, Colts, 1st and “A” Teams. They have all done wonders, sorting out the finances, sponsorship and the social use of the Club.

Once again the Colts are looking very strong, with some players progressing through to the first team.

I would like to wish our senior coaches much success for his season and I hope that some of the senior players will help train the Minis’ and Colts when occasion allows. Talking of help; the Committee needs some from retired players and any other willing volunteers to help maintain the facilities and man the gates on Match days. Give me a call to sign up! [01326 314574]

Good Luck to all Falmouth Players this year - play hard but fair and, above all, enjoy it.

MATCH REPORTS

April 26th 2009 – Under 14s Runners-Up at Liskeard/Looe Sevens Tournament

Courtesy of Colin Watts

Falmouth were runners-up to Penzance in a sevens tournament that contained some fast-paced rugby, exciting tries and controversy in equal measure.

Falmouth had a relatively straightforward run through the first round beating Saltash and Liskeard/Looe in Group One.  Saltash were shocked from the kick off by a try from Grant Burrows in the first ten seconds.  Falmouth then scored at a steady rate for the rest of the match with another try from Grant, two from Angus MacKinnon and one each from Mike Jones and Jon Mailes.  Saltash grabbed a consolation try in the last few seconds to end the match 35 – 5.  Liskeard/Looe were sterner opponents and kept Falmouth under pressure for long periods of the match, even finishing the first half two tries to one up with the only Falmouth score by Angus MacKinnon.  Falmouth worked harder in the second half and absorbed the Liskeard pressure from the kick-off.  Tries from Craig Hunter and Grant Burrows recovered the lead and despite a late try from the opposition, Falmouth won 15 – 10 and took top position in the group and a place in the Cup second round.

Penzance and Newquay won their respective groups and joined Falmouth in the second round Cup group.  All three teams were due to play each other with the top two teams then playing each other in the Cup final.  Penzance beat Falmouth 20 – 5 in the first match, with a single score from Grant Burrows to deny them a clean sheet.  Penzance also beat Newquay in the next match.  It was at this point that controversy arose as Penzance then refused to play any more games based on a dubious technicality that no other team seemed to be in agreement with.  Although Falmouth made it to the Cup final after a convincing 50 – 0 win over Newquay (try scorers: Angus MacKinnon (5), Craig Hunter (2), Jack Reed (1), Grant Burrows (1) and Joseph Parry (1)), Penzance refused to play them and declared themselves tournament winners.  The controversy in the closing stages of the tournament marred the spirit of the day somewhat.  However, the overall standard of play from all the teams was a reminder of the excellent state of junior rugby in Cornwall which bodes well for the future.

These were the last matches of the season for the U14 County Champions.  The squad and coaches can now look forward to a well-earned break over the summer before turning their attention to a new campaign in the autumn.

Squad: Tom Watts, Joseph Parry, Craig Hunter, Jon Mailes, Jack Reed, Mike Jones, Angus MacKinnon, Grant Burrows, Kieran Rodda, Jack Innard.  Coach: David Reed.  Lead supporter: Ollie Reed.

April 18th 2009 – Falmouth U14s v St Joseph’s

Falmouth U14s    24 pts
St Joseph’s U14s 17 pts

A cool and blustery spring morning saw the Falmouth U14s take on a touring side from Newport, Wales.  There were more than a few nerves on show.  The Falmouth boys had suffered a resounding defeat at Welsh hands twelve months earlier and no-one was quite sure whether this time round Falmouth’s new found strength and determination as County Champions would be enough overcome Welsh passion.

Both teams started well with the Welsh boys showing a particularly strong defence against Falmouth’s attacks.  Despite a barn-storming run from Charlie Conchie and being inches from the try line on several occasions, Falmouth could not get the ball over.  Eventually the Welsh defence cracked and Grant Burrows managed to touch the ball down (not converted).  The St Joseph’s boys fought back hard and equalised within a few minutes.  Determined to establish an advantage before half time, Falmouth again pushed forward with a try from Angus Mackinnon (not converted), set up by some fine passing from Jack Reed and Jonny Mailes.

Both sides returned to the field with renewed vigour after the half time break and Falmouth showing some particularly brave tackling from Kieran Rodda and Harry Spargo.  Although they lacked the weight of the Welsh team and sometimes struggled to win the scrums, Falmouth were by far the faster of the two sides.  Two more tries from Grant Burrows (both converted, Jack Reed) showed why the team has become such a force to be reckoned with.  St Joseph’s continued to battle until the end – and special praise must go to Will James for holding up what looked like a certain Welsh try – but the final whistle confirmed that Falmouth were the dominant players.

Man of the Match: Kieran Rodda

Squad list: Hamish Wilson, Joe Martin, Harry Spargo, Tom Watts, Henry Howarth, Craig Hunter, Jonny Mailes (Capt), Jack Reed, Charlie Conchie, Angus MacKinnon, Grant Burrows, Mike Jones, Kieran Rodda, Fergus Crockford, Charles Hardstaff, Casper Fuller, Will James, Hugh Thomas.

Falmouth U14 vs Cinderford and Camborne
Sunday 5th April 2009

Falmouth U14            43 pts
Cinderford U14           0 pts

One week on from their triumph over Penzance in the final of the County Cup, the combination of family holidays, Ireland weekend trips, and school commitments meant that a depleted squad of just fourteen journeyed up to Camborne.  The morning’s sport opened with Falmouth facing a touring squad from Cinderford in Gloucester, whose senior team had played Mounts Bay on Friday evening.

Despite missing some of their key players and fielding less than a full squad, the Falmouth team immediately set about demonstrating why they were worthy winners of the Cup.  Mike Jones wasted little time in showing his blistering pace and quickly got the first points on the board (converted, Jack Reed).  Their opening success was soon followed by more tries, with Joe Martin, Tom Watts, Jack Reed, Angus MacKinnon and Mike Jones (twice) all adding to the score.  Jack Reed yet again confirmed his excellent form by converting four out of the six tries.  Special mention to Hamish Wilson for his fearless tackling and spirited running.

The whistle went after a fast paced thirty minutes with Falmouth beating Cinderford 43 points to 0.  Despite Falmouth’s complete dominance of the match, the Cinderford boys refused to accept defeat and battled gamely until the end.

Falmouth U14            31 pts
Camborne U14          12 pts

With only fourteen boys to their squad, there was no opportunity to rest players or bring on substitutes before Falmouth found themselves up against a Camborne side hopeful they could take advantage of Falmouth’s tired legs and short numbers to snatch a victory.

On this occasion it fell to Angus Mackinnon to open the scoring for Falmouth, winning two tries in quick succession (one converted, Jack Reed).  Camborne, however, were determined to acquit themselves well and refused to concede defeat.  After some hard play from both sides, Camborne battled back to score a try.  Falmouth were equally determined to maintain control of the match and it was not long before Kieran Rodda forced himself over the line for a much deserved five points (converted, Jack Reed).  Two more tries from Falmouth (Craig Hunter and Mike Jones), helped by some fantastic kicking from Jack Innard, saw the team speed to a decisive finishing score of 31 to 12 despite Camborne’s best efforts.  Falmouth’s victory was in no small part due to the strength of their forwards, with Josh Phillips and Fergus Crockford in particular playing a vital role in dominating the rucks.

Man of the match: Hamish Wilson

Squad: Hamish Wilson, Harry Spargo, Tom Watts,  Josh Phillips, Craig Hunter, Jack Reed, Charlie Conchie, Angus Mackinnon, Michael Jones, Kieran Rodda, Fergus Crockford, Joe Martin, Jack Innard, Charles Hardstaff

March 29th 2009 - Under 14s Vs Penzance & Newlyn
U14 County Cup Final at Penryn RFC

Falmouth U14                        22pts
Penzance & Newlyn U14      15 pts

Falmouth are U14 County Champions after emerging victorious from a fast-paced and exciting game of rugby.  Hot favourites Penzance & Newlyn were comprehensively taken apart in the first half by a Falmouth side playing at full throttle from the kick off.  The ferocity and sheer intensity of the pressure from Falmouth took the Pirates by surprise and kept them on the back foot.  Expansive and flowing play linking both forwards and backs led to a break from winger Mickey Jones who took Falmouth deep into Penzance territory.  A series of penalties gave Falmouth more ground and a better position to launch the final assault on the try line.  After several probing runs from the three-quarters, it was second row Tom Watts who made it over the line for the first points of the match (conversion by Jack Reed).  If Penzance were shocked then, they were stunned four minutes later when Angus MacKinnon broke through to score in the corner (not converted).  Brimming with confidence, Falmouth continued to play fast and open rugby and it was inevitable that more points were to follow.  Grant Burrows showed a clean pair of heels to his opposite number and just made it to the corner in spite of a fine effort from the Penzance No 8 to take him into touch (not converted).  At the break, Falmouth couldn’t quite believe what they had achieved and some were worried that all they had done was to wake a sleeping giant for the second half.

As expected, the talented Pirates team were far from beaten and they came straight back from the restart to score their first try in the first few minutes after an excellent run from their No 12 (not converted).  Aware now that victory was far from certain, the Falmouth boys had to fight hard to contain a resurgent Penzance.  Still buoyant from the first half though, Falmouth were always looking for the opportunity to counter-attack and they continued to pressurize their opponents.  A clearance kick from Jack Reed was chased down and kicked on twice by Angus MacKinnon.  Out-pacing the Penzance winger and full-back for nearly fifty yards, Angus arrived to meet the ball as it popped up five yards from the try line and it was a simple matter for him to carry it over for his second try (not converted).  Against the run of play, Penzance kept themselves in the game with two breakaway tries from their three-quarters (not converted).  However, it was to be Falmouth’s day as they managed to curtail any further scoring opportunities from their opponents.  The final whistle was greeted with jubilation by the players and a mini pitch invasion by the coaches and supporters.  Falmouth were probably considered underdogs coming into this match, not least by their opponents.  What made the difference today was perhaps the overwhelming desire to win from Falmouth rather than the expectation of Penzance.  Congratulations to coaches Kim Conchie and David Reed for their dedication and effort to allow this Falmouth side to realise its potential this season, and to all the parents for their continued support.  Most of all though, congratulations to the Falmouth boys themselves who gave their all and reaped the rewards.

Squad: Hamish Wilson, Toby Cumins, Will James, Alex Bullock, Harry Spargo, Joe Martin, Charlie Sanders, Tom Watts, Fergus Crockford, Josh Phillips, Joseph Parry, Craig Hunter, Jonny Mailes (Capt), Charlie Conchie, Jack Reed, Mickey Jones, Angus MacKinnon, Grant Burrows, Matthew Tredget, Louis Bamford, Kieran Rodda.

FALMOUTH RFC U14 TOUR TO SOMERSET

The long awaited Falmouth U14 tour of Somerset took place this weekend under glorious blue skies.  Tour Manager Kim Conchie and Head Coach David Reed took a full squad on the road to play matches against clubs in Taunton, Wellington and Minehead.  Using the Doniford Bay Holiday Park as a base, the players and a large contingent of family supporters enjoyed a weekend away from home and plenty of rugby.

Friday 20 Mar 09 – Taunton RFC

Taunton U14                        17
Falmouth U14                      24

Falmouth began their Spring tour with a victory over Taunton RFC.  On a floodlit pitch Falmouth kicked off for the first of three twenty minute periods and immediately put the hosts under pressure inside their own half.  Effectively camped in the Taunton 22, it was almost inevitable that the first score would go to the visitors.  After some great flowing play within the backs, it was left to Mikey Jones to carry the ball over the line after wrong-footing the full back with a fantastic sidestep (not converted by Jack Reed).  A dazed Taunton were further rocked by a second Mikey Jones try two minutes later after his blistering pace left the hosts standing (not converted by Jack Reed).  Not content with this early lead, Falmouth continued to pile on the pressure and were denied 3 further tries when the ball was judged held up by a tenacious Taunton defence.  However, there was no denying the try when Craig Hunter bludgeoned his way over the line and grounded the ball near the posts (converted by Jack Reed).  Falmouth ended the first period 17-0 up.

Both teams made changes at the break and Taunton’s seemed the most effective.  They started the period with several phases of much better play that led them closer and closer to the Falmouth line.  Only solid defence in depth from Falmouth, including some particularly crunching tackles from Jack Reed, Grant Burrows and Henry Howarth, prevented the Taunton backs from running in two or three tries.  Eventually Falmouth found some cohesion and began to play some excellent flowing rugby to move them out of their own half.  It wasn’t long before they were in striking distance of the Taunton line and Mikey Jones made the final break through to complete his hat-trick (converted by Jack Reed).  Taunton failed to give in and it wasn’t long before they scored in the final moments of the period (not converted).

A rejuvenated Taunton side started the final period with a flourish.  Immediately on the back foot, Falmouth struggled to cope with the constant stream of attacks after making numerous changes in key positions.  Taunton scored two tries through the pace and strength of their replacement winger and Falmouth had to re-organise their defence to cope with the threat.  With a core contingent of the forwards always fighting for the ball in the rucks and mauls, the likes of Hamish Wilson and Joseph Parry would stand off to provide greater breadth in the defensive line.  The courage and commitment of the whole Falmouth side were required to contain the hosts, as demonstrated by Louis Bamford who on several occasions threw himself in the path of attackers twice his size to cover the touch line.  The tactics paid off and Taunton eventually ran out of steam.  However, Falmouth never looked really likely to score again and the match ended 17-24 in the visitors’ favour.

Falmouth man of the match: Mikey Jones for three fantastic tries.

Saturday 21 Mar 09 – Wellington RFC

Wellington U14                    5
Falmouth U14                      5

The Falmouth squad arrived at Wellington in a decidedly lacklustre state after their first night away from home and it seemed to take the whole first half for the boys to warm up and switch on.  In fact, the classic quote ‘it was a game of two halves’ was made for this match.

Right from the outset it was obvious that this game was going to be a hard fought, physical and fast-paced affair.  Wellington started in top gear and immediately put Falmouth on the back foot.  Although relatively solid in defence, Falmouth struggled to string more than two passes together in attack and handed the ball to the hosts on almost every move.  It wasn’t long before the well-drilled Wellington back line out flanked the visitors to score the first try (not converted).  Falmouth tried desperately to reply, but they remained rattled and seemed to fumble the ball at every opportunity.  Despite the individual flashes of pace and skill, such as those by from Craig Hunter and Tom Watts, some attempts to create space and overlaps by Jack Reed and Charlie Conchie and the sheer hard graft and support of the forwards like Josh Phillips and Toby Cumins, nothing came to fruition.  Even when they were in sight of the Wellington line, Falmouth threw it away with some very uncharacteristic indiscipline that cost them a series of penalties and valuable territory.

Whatever the coaches’ half-time ‘chat’ covered it certainly did the trick.  Falmouth looked like a different team from the re-start with a much more positive approach.  The increased confidence paid dividends in the handling department and they started to play their more usual flowing rugby.  Despite the increased possession, wave after wave of Falmouth attacks were frustrated by a seemingly impregnable Wellington defence.  The forwards were unable to ground the ball after driving over the line at least twice and the backs could never quite break enough tackles to reach the line at all.  That is until man of the match Craig Hunter finally found a gap and forced his way over to score in the last 5 minutes, much to the relief of everyone from Falmouth.  The result hung on a tricky conversion attempt by Jack Reed.  As the whole crowd and both teams held their breath, the ball clipped the upright and bounced back on the wrong side.  Cruelly denied the victory at the end, Falmouth should be happy with the draw.  Literally throwing the first half away, they came back to win the second half.  The result was a fair reflection on the rugby played by both sides and a timely reminder of the need for consistency from Falmouth with the Cup Final approaching.

Falmouth man of the match: Craig Hunter for his drive and aggression when playing in both the forwards and backs, and of course for scoring a try to save his team.

Sunday 22 Mar 09 – Minehead Barbarians RFC

Minehead U14                     17
Falmouth U14                      14

Falmouth failed to fire on all cylinders for most of this match and narrowly lost as a result.  A spirited come back in the final quarter made the score line respectable, but there was insufficient time to repair the damage.  Despite frequent player rotations during the game, the team were running out of steam at the end of a long weekend.

The match also didn’t start well when Craig Hunter had to be carried off after only two minutes when his knee was stamped on.  A well drilled and fresh Minehead side were running Falmouth ragged and it was inevitable that the first points went to the hosts.  Slowly settling into some sort of rhythm, Falmouth made several forays into the Minehead half, but without their usual sparkle they were unable to make the final breakthrough and score.  As the frustration mounted, the number of fumbles and missed tackles grew.  Minehead took full advantage of every mistake to keep pressure on the Falmouth defence.  Despite some good tackling, especially by Jack Reed and Kieran Rodda the hosts found a gap to score again just before half-time (not converted).

Although slightly battered and dazed at the break, the Falmouth boys were keen to get stuck into the second half.  Still struggling to find their natural rhythm, they absorbed the Minehead attacks, but luck was not with them when they tried to create chances.  Feeling that the referee’s whistle was only playing Minehead’s tune, Falmouth became frustrated again.  At this point it was the hosts who began to make mistakes and Falmouth were able to maintain possession and gain ground.  With 15 minutes left to play, the visitor’s three-quarter line finally made their presence felt when Mikey Jones burst over the line for the first try.  Jack Reed’s conversion was incredible as although the kick was short the ball bounced once in front of the posts and sailed over the bar.  At last Falmouth had some luck!  This seemed to enliven Falmouth who returned the ball to the Minehead try line three minutes later in the arms of Henry Howarth (converted by Jack Reed).  Showing real grit and determination, Falmouth tried hard to score again, but they just ran out of time.  It was a disappointing end to the tour in some ways, but the boys were tired and they know that they are capable of much better performances.  A comment from one of the boys as they left the pitch seemed to sum things up: “Next time we go on tour, we MUST go to bed earlier!”

Man of the match: Jack Reed for some crunching tackles, nifty breaks and an amazing conversion.

The squad and accompanying supporters had a thoroughly enjoyable time and hailed the tour as a resounding success.  This was largely due to the huge amount of time and effort invested in the preparation and execution of the tour by coaches Kim Conchie and David Reed, and by Steve Burrows who did a fantastic job arranging and booking the accommodation for everyone and organising the touchline equipment.  It was also down to the boys themselves who were a credit to their parents and Falmouth RFC throughout.  The Club and U14 team are extremely grateful to the generous sponsors who made the tour possible.  It was a great experience for the boys and it has given them some incredibly valuable experience for their continued rugby development.

HSBC Falmouth Sponsor Falmouth Rugby Tour

Aside from victory over St Austell on Sunday in the Cornwall U14 Cup Competition, Falmouth RFC U14’s had a second reason to celebrate when Mr Steve Martin of HSBC Falmouth presented them with some generous sponsorship towards their forthcoming rugby tour to Somerset.  In late March around twenty five U14 players will travel north to play local schools and clubs in and around Taunton and Minehead.  After a very successful season so far, the Falmouth boys are looking forward to some new challenges and the chance to fly the Cornish flag further afield.

March 15th 2009 – Under 14s vs Bridport (Home)

Falmouth U14               50 pts
Bridport U14                   0 pts

Falmouth played host to a touring side from Dorset on a truly beautiful Spring day at the Recreation Ground.  The home side played very well and had the measure of the tourists from early in the first half and never looked back.

Bridport played some good rugby and tried desperately to fight back, but after a tiring few days on the road they didn’t have much left in reserve.  Despite a few hairy moments, Falmouth easily kept a clean sheet.  The best chance for Bridport was thwarted by a superb ‘last man’ tackle by Charles Hardstaff.  Falmouth ran in eight tries overall and dominated the game.  Try scorers: Tom Watts, Grant Burrows (2), Angus MacKinnon (2), Mikey Jones (2) and Craig Hunter (5 conversions by Jack Reed).

Next weekend the Falmouth squad are themselves on tour in Somerset where they hope to proudly fly the Cornish flag and continue their winning form.

Squad: Hamish Wilson, Joe Martin, Harry Spargo, Tom Watts, Josh Phillips, Joseph Parry, Craig Hunter, Jonny Mailes (Capt), Jack Innard, Jack Reed, Angus MacKinnon, Grant Burrows, Mickey Jones, Kieran Rodda, Fergus Crockford, Charles Hardstaff, Louis Bamford, Matthew Tredgett, Alex Bullock, Toby Cummins, Casper Fuller, Charlie Sanders.

March 8th 2009 - Under 14s Vs Bodmin (Home)
U14 Cup Semi-Final

Falmouth U14               25 pts
Bodmin U14                    5 pts

It’s been a long time coming, but a Falmouth rugby side have reached a cup final!  Victory over Bodmin today at The Recreation Ground means that the U14 team will face Penzance & Newlyn in the U14 County Cup Competition final on 29th March.

Pressure on the Bodmin try line from the Falmouth kick off eventually paid dividends after solid Bodmin defence and some Falmouth handling errors thwarted several promising moves.  Adding more firepower to the back line, Craig Hunter scored two tries in the first half obviously relishing his trial at full back.  Bodmin failed to capitalise on the wind advantage and even though they tackled hard and dominated many of the scrums, rucks and mauls, they spent precious little time in the Falmouth half and found themselves 10 – 0 down at the interval.

The second half was dominated by the forwards of both sides.  Utilising territory gained by Jack Reed’s kicking and the probing runs of Grant Burrows it was, however, Falmouth who had the lion’s share of possession.  The stalwart front row of Hamish Wilson, Harry Spargo and Joe Martin were frequently pushed off the ball in the set piece, but were more than a match for their larger rivals in open play.   Constantly in the thick of battle to secure the ball, they worked tirelessly with their second rows Tom Watts and Josh Phillips (and later Charlie Hardstaff and Fergus Crockford) to form a solid base in the Bodmin half for the try scorers to work their magic.  Tries from Jonny Mailes, Joe Parry and Angus MacKinnon sealed Bodmin’s fate.  A well deserved late consolation try for Bodmin came from their No. 8 who snaffled the ball from a maul and crashed through the blind side to score in the corner and deny Falmouth a clean sheet.

In this hard fought confrontation, a whole team effort won the day for Falmouth with some individual flair to produce the tries.  Both teams deserve praise for playing entertaining rugby in some awful weather conditions.  Details of the Cup Final venue and timings will be published in due course and the U14 team would welcome your support in what should be a thrilling match.

Squad: Hamish Wilson, Joe Martin, Harry Spargo, Tom Watts, Josh Phillips, Henry Howarth, Joseph Parry, Craig Hunter, Jon Mailes (Capt), Charlie Conchie, Jack Innard, Jack Reed, Angus MacKinnon, Grant Burrows, Mickey Jones, Fergus Crockford, Charlie Hardstaff, Louis Bamford.

February 8th 2009 - Under 14s Vs St Austell (Home)

Comfortable Quarter-Final Cup Victory for Strong Falmouth

Falmouth U14               24 pts
St Austell U14                 7 pts

Falmouth progressed to the semi-finals of the Cornwall U14 Cup Competition with a convincing victory over St Austell.  The wet and slippery conditions forced some scrappy play from both sides, but Falmouth made best use of their possession.

Jonny Mailes opened the scoring for Falmouth after six minutes and a further period of incessant pressure on the St Austell try line resulted in a second try from Craig Hunter (both converted by Jack Reed).  ‘The Saints’ replied with an opportunistic try early in the second period when a Falmouth fumble allowed them to kick the ball over the try line and dive on it before the Falmouth defence could react.  This was to be their last realistic scoring chance, however, and two further tries from Joe Martin and Tom Watts (neither converted) put the game beyond reach.  Despite some valiant St Austell defence, the Falmouth forwards were just too strong for ‘The Saints’ to handle.

Squad: Hamish Wilson, Joe Martin, Harry Spargo, Tom Watts, Josh Phillips, Henry Howarth, Joseph Parry, Craig Hunter, Jon Mailes (Capt), Charlie Conchie, Jack Innard, Jack Reed, Angus MacKinnon, Grant Burrows, Mickey Jones, Matt Tredgett, Charlie Fuller, Fergus Crockford, Charlie Hardstaff, Louis Bamford.

February 1st 2009 – Under 14s Vs Redruth (Home)

Falmouth U14               35 pts
Redruth U14                  22 pts

It is said that revenge is a dish best served cold and Falmouth managed it today with a victory over Redruth in a biting cold wind at the Recreation Ground.  Redruth are a strong and skilful side and they are the only team to have beaten Falmouth so far this season.  Having lost to them on both occasions in the autumn this was a sweet victory for the Falmouth boys.

In testing wind conditions and on a sticky pitch there was little to separate the teams until ‘The Reds’ pounced on some scrappy line out ball to open the scoring with an easy try.  Playing with the wind, Redruth could have kept the pressure on by kicking deep into the Falmouth half, but they preferred to keep the ball in hand.  Either way, the Falmouth pace men were always looking to break free and it was Grant Burrows who made the first dash for the line to score under the posts (converted by Jack Reed).  Some poor handling gave the Redruth No12 the second of his tries with an easy interception and run in to score (not converted).  The lead changed hands again when Mikey Jones flew down the wing from his own 22 yard line to score (converted by Jack Reed).  But then a series of silly penalties given away by Falmouth allowed Redruth to advance into a good strategic position which they took full advantage of to end the half 3 points ahead.

Having received the Redruth kick off, Craig Hunter exploded from deep in his own half and scythed through the opposition to score a fantastic individual try within the first 30 seconds (converted by Jack Reed).  Falmouth’s handling was better after the break and it was only a few minutes before they scored again: Charlie Conchie spotted a rare gap in ‘The Reds’ defence and made enough space to unleash Grant Burrows for his second try (converted by Jack Reed).  Redruth piled on the pressure and only some solid last ditch defence by Falmouth stopped them from scoring on several occasions.  The final points came in the last few minutes when Jack Reed sold the Redruth three-quarters a beautiful dummy allowing him to run clear and touch down under the posts to make his own conversion simple.

The final score could easily have been much closer as Redruth played well, showing great determination in the rucks and mauls and some excellent moves in the backs.  However, it was Falmouth who deservedly came out on top this time, again highlighting the improvement the whole team has made throughout the season.

Squad: H Wilson, J Martin, A Bullock, T Cumins, H Spargo, T Watts, J Phillips, H Howarth, J Parry, C Hunter, J Mailes (Capt), C Conchie, J Innard, J Reed, A MacKinnon, G Burrows, M Jones, M Tredgett, C Sanders, K Rodda, C Fuller, F Crockford, C Hardstaff, L Bamford.

January 25th 2009 - Falmouth U12s V Helston/Camborne

Courtesy of Pete Tredget Courtesy of Pete Tredget

Following last year’s very close match away to Camborne, Falmouth were under no delusions that the visitors would be out for revenge.   With very boggy conditions under foot, the visitors kicked off and were immediately defending as Falmouth’s full back put on a charge down the pitch.  With the pack in support, the home team were able to progress down the pitch – albeit through mostly sliding in the mud!! Cries of despair went up from the many parents on the touch lines who all knew that the kit would be difficult to clean!!   Defences were difficult to break in the first ten minutes but the home team were rewarded when Ben Ellis scorched down the touch line to score the first try of the match.  Helston then began a series of attacks but the weather conditions hampered their efforts resulting in turn over ball enabling Sam Tredget dodge through the defence to score.  Falmouth went into the break leading by three tries to one.

The second half saw the visitors even more determined to force a win but again handling errors enabled Ben Ellis to grab a second try.  With Sam Williams making a storming run down the wing, Falmouth looked to put another score on the board only to be denied by some fearless tackling.

Further tries for Charlie Hatcher and a third from Ben Ellis saw Falmouth run out eventual winners at 38 points to 19.

January 25th 2009 - Under 14s Vs Liskeard/Looe Away

Liskeard/Looe U14       0 pts
Falmouth U14               36 pts

Another decisive victory for Falmouth, but this one did not come easily.  Play was end to end for long periods of the game and it was only the explosive individual breakaway tries by several key Falmouth players that tipped the balance.

Falmouth kicked off and caught Liskeard napping by scoring in the first minute.  After recovering the ball within a few yards of the try line, Tom Watts crashed over for the first score (not converted).  Possession was shared for the rest of the half with Liskeard almost scoring on several occasions, even when reduced to 14 players through injury in the last ten minutes.  Falmouth's Angus MacKinnon always looked likely to score, and he eventually succeeded on the final play with a fine individual effort from half-way (not converted).

The second half began with a Falmouth score in the first few minutes.  Jonny Mailes made light work of the Liskeard defence during a forty yard solo run ending under the posts (converted by Jack Reed).  Play then settled into equal possession again, but this time punctuated by a succession of Falmouth tries.  Craig Hunter, Joe Parry and Grant Burrows all scored from unstoppable individual breaks starting from inside their own half.  Two conversions by Jack Reed completed the final score.

Falmouth did not produce a polished performance today, but some strong individual efforts, coupled with solid defence from the whole team overall, maintained their winning streak.

January 4th 2009 – Under 14s vs Bude Away

Bude U14              0 pts
Falmouth U14     38 pts

After a short delay whilst the pitch defrosted, Falmouth cruised to a comfortable six try victory over Bude and secured their place in the second round of the U14 Cup Competition.

Immediate pressure following the Falmouth kick off resulted in a classic No.8’s try by Jonny Mailes from a five yard scrum after four minutes (not converted).  This stirred Bude into action and, as they pushed into the opposition half, Falmouth gave away a series of penalties to aid their advance.  However, after ten minutes Bude had not progressed much past the Falmouth 22 yard line and Grant Burrows had obviously had enough time being on the defensive.  From a turn over ball, he made a brilliant solo run from well inside his own half to score under the posts (converted by Jack Reed).  Bude’s three-quarters made numerous attempts to breach the Falmouth line, but solid tackling in depth stymied every move.  Whatever ground Bude made was quickly reversed by strong probing runs by Falmouth and it was only a matter of time before Angus MacKinnon took advantage of the weak Bude tackling to score (converted by Jack Reed).

The second half started disastrously for Bude as they conceded two tries in as many minutes.  The first came when Falmouth’s Craig Hunter received the kick off and linked with Grant Burrows to take the ball to the Bude five yard line.  It was then a simple task for Henry Howarth to pick up and drive to score with his first touch of the match (not converted).  Joseph Parry then received the subsequent restart and made a storming solo run straight down the touchline to score the second (converted by Jack Reed).  Bude continued in vain to make any sort of mark on the match and Falmouth, absorbing everything thrown at them, always looked dangerous on the counter attack.  In the final minutes, Craig Hunter brushed aside numerous defenders to gain an ideal line out position.  From the set piece, Joseph Parry made for the posts again, but unfortunately he was held up short of the line and it was left to Henry Howarth to repeat his excellent supporting play to score the final try (converted by Jack Reed).

In the next round Falmouth will face either Camborne or St Austell on February 8th.

December 21st 2008 – Under 14s Vs Truro (Home)

Falmouth U14     19pts
Truro U14             0pts

The rumour before the match was that Falmouth had not beaten Truro for almost six years.  It was clear from the confident mood in which the Truro team and supporters arrived that they fully expected to maintain this winning streak.  However, it was time for Falmouth to re-write the history books.

From the kick off it was obvious that the Falmouth players intended to take the game to Truro.  They succeeded in the first period as Truro only made it into the Falmouth half on one occasion.  They were under constant pressure and only their organised and committed defence kept Falmouth from scoring on numerous occasions.  Phase after phase of play repeatedly brought Falmouth closer and closer to the try line only for Truro to scramble the ball clear with a kick to touch.  The Falmouth forwards were awesome and it was inevitable that the defence would eventually crack.  Although it could easily have been any of the Falmouth players, it was Jonny Mailes who finally carried the ball over the line to score.  Jack Reed’s conversion sailed over on the stroke of half-time.

At the re-start, Falmouth set-up camp in the opposition half and effectively stifled Truro’s playing style.  On their rare forays into Falmouth territory Truro certainly looked capable of scoring, but their hopes were repeatedly dashed by the ferocious tackling of a Falmouth side who resented giving away an inch of ground.  After five minutes of play, a quick thinking change of direction by Jack Reed exploited a rare gap on the blind side which then released Mikey Jones.  With two players to beat, Mikey still made the try look easy.  Close to the touchline, Angus MacKinnon was unable to make the conversion.  Truro were far from beaten and possession swapped back and forth for a time with neither side gaining much advantage.  Tight Truro defence had prevented much of Grant Burrow’s usual expansive play, but he eventually broke free from half-way and showed a clean pair of heels to everyone to score under the posts leaving an easy conversion for Jack Reed.  In the last phase of play Grant almost scored again, but Truro’s James Murdoch just managed to catch him ten yards short of the line.  The final whistle was met with jubilation by the Falmouth team.

Both sides were a credit to their coaches and clubs for playing good rugby and maintaining their sportsmanship throughout.  However, today was Falmouth’s day to celebrate.  The victory was due to a fantastic team performance and is an achievement of which they can all be justifiably proud.

Falmouth U12s V Helston/Camborne 14th December 2008

Under blizzard conditions, with the A30 closed at Camborne, Falmouth travelled to Helston for this seasons return fixture.  Both teams managed to field full teams and with Falmouth winning the toss, the kick off was greeted with a hail storm.  Oblivious to the cold snap, Falmouth’s Sam Tredget opened the scoring with a fine run through the home side’s defence.  The score sheet remained static for the next 5 minutes as both sides mounted attack after attack but it wasn’t until Ben Ellis made a break down the wing that the scoreboard finally began to tick over.  Falmouth’s Tom Tierney then scored from the back of a driving maul.  With half time approaching, Falmouth’s attack became more intense and was rewarded by scrum half Ross Davis scoring after a jinking run from the back of the scrum.  The second half saw the home side take advantage of the slope and began to close the gap.

Further tries from Ben Ellis and Sam Tredget (who successfully converted all the tries) eventually saw Falmouth run out winners at 42 points to 37.

December 14th 2008 – Under 14s Vs Bodmin Away

Bodmin U14          5pts
Falmouth U14     47pts

On a waterlogged Bodmin pitch, the Falmouth boys lined up for a team photograph before the match.  Unfortunately, aside from the pushing, shoving and friendly insults, they sounded more like a doctor's waiting room than a rugby team as the majority struggle to shake off their niggling coughs.  Still, they were confident and eager to repeat the quick fire starting tactic discovered in the last match.  Spirits were also raised by the welcome return of Will James.

Craig Hunter led the charge and surprised Bodmin by stealing the ball after they had received the Falmouth kick off.  Shrugging off numerous tackles, he burst through the defensive line for a fine opening try (not converted).  Play then settled into relative stalemate, albeit mostly in the Bodmin half, as both sides struggled to keep the ball in hand and stay on their feet in the swampy conditions.  Bodmin broke the deadlock when the ball made it to their winger who is noted as a particular 'speed merchant'.  He made an excellent run down the touchline to score (not converted), but this was his last real scoring opportunity as the Falmouth three-quarter line then effectively closed out the Bodmin backs for the rest of the match.  Falmouth then set up camp in the opposition half, but concerted Bodmin defence meant that the forwards had to work hard for more points.  Jo Parry and Angus MacKinnon each grabbed a try following several phases of driving play, and Grant Burrows scored with a break from the half way line (none were converted).

The assault on the Bodmin try line continued immediately after the break when Falmouth produced some excellent looping interplay involving both forwards and backs that resulted in two tries for Mikey Jones (the second converted by Jack Reed) with good support from Casper Fuller.  Although Bodmin tackled well, Falmouth were a much fitter and more mobile side overall and they overwhelmed Bodmin in open play.  Strong running from Hamish Wilson, Tom Watts and Josh Phillips, amongst others, set up Angus MacKinnon and Jonny Mailes for a try each as the forwards took control of the score board.  Craig Hunter ended the match as he started by smashing his way over the line for the final score.  Again, Falmouth produced a very good team performance where everyone contributed to the victory.

Falmouth must take heart from their recent success and maintain their growing confidence.  There is a lot of pride at stake in the Truro fixture at home next weekend and it will undoubtedly be an exciting match to watch.  Truro will be a tough nut, but this Falmouth team is capable of cracking it.

December 6th 2008 – Under 14s Vs St Ives Away

St Ives U14          12pts
Falmouth U14     55pts

On a beautiful, sunny, Saturday morning in St Ives, the players and supporters were treated to fantastic views over the town and beyond to Godrevy Island.

Falmouth swapped their traditional tactic of opening the game half asleep for a fast and furious run of play which resulted in a flurry of tries from Grant Burrows (two) and Jonny Mailes (one) in the first 10 minutes.  Jack Reed converted two of these to leave St Ives reeling 19-0 down.  To their credit, St Ives came back fighting and scored a quick try almost straight from the third restart after some quick thinking play from their backs.  Things were more even for the rest of the half until Grant broke free and struck again, taking time to position the ball under the posts to make the conversion easy for Jack.  Falmouth ended the first half 26-7 ahead.

Ragged play and some poor handling in the second half meant Falmouth frequently lost the ball through unforced errors.  Fortunately for Falmouth, St Ives rarely capitalised on the turn-over ball.  When Falmouth did keep the ball in hand, both backs and forwards were rampant in open play and it wasn’t long before Mikey Jones scored close to the touchline.  Unfortunately, the conversion attempt was too long even for Angus MacKinnon’s boot.  St Ives still refused to give up and an immediate counter attack from several capable runners in their back line broke numerous Falmouth tackles to score a well deserved try (not converted) to salvage some pride.  From then on, however, it was Falmouth who had the run of play until the final whistle with more tries from Grant (two), Craig (one) and Jonny (on), plus two conversions from Jack Reed, to clinch the match 55-12.

Falmouth have developed a fantastic team spirit this season.  Several of the lads are suffering from persistent coughs and colds yet they still turn out to play.  With only one extra player available on the day, everyone had to give their all and no-one failed to deliver.

Squad: T Watts, H Spargo, H Wilson, J Phillips, H Haworth, C Hunter, J Parry, J Mailes (Capt), J Innard, J Reed, A MacKinnon, G Burrows, M Jones, C Fuller, K Rodda, T Cumins. ‘T’ Lady: C Reed.

Sunday Nov 23rd 2008 - Under 14s vs Saltash Away

Saltash U14s        22pts
Falmouth U14s    28pts

For some, the long haul to Saltash was slightly longer than necessary and Falmouth had to start the match with only thirteen players.  A 'minor navigational error' meant that four Falmouth players did not arrive at the ground until the first half was almost over.

Nevertheless, the depleted Falmouth team pulled together and held their own against concerted Saltash pressure.  Dogged work by the forwards was rewarded with two tries from J Parry which the trusty boot of J Reed duly converted in tricky wind conditions.

The first period ended 17-14 to Saltash.

Back to full strength, Falmouth started well in the second half with some characteristic magic from G Burrows.  He made a break from inside his own half to ground the ball under the posts and give Falmouth the lead.  Two more points were added by another J Reed conversion.  Falmouth could have dominated if they had not made numerous unforced handling errors from set pieces which kept Saltash in the game.  Indeed, Falmouth were on the ropes deep in their own half for long periods and Saltash took the lead again with a try from their No.8.  Although the try was unconverted, Falmouth now trailed by one point.  Fortunately, Falmouth's forwards continued to outclass their opposite numbers, particularly in open play.  T Watts eventually crashed over the line to score following a text book driving maul.  J Reed put the icing on the cake with two more points to end the match 22-28 to Falmouth.

All the Falmouth forwards deserve a special mention, particularly after today's good performance.  Each week the point scorers make the headlines, but their
exploits would not be possible without the hard graft and persistent effort from the pack.

The next match is away to St Ives on 6th Dec, so if anyone has a spare Sat Nav....

Squad: J Jermyn, T Watts, J Parry, A Bullock, H Spargo, H Wilson, G Burrows, M Tredgett, J Mailes, J Phillips, J Innard, H Haworth, J Reed, L Bamford, M Jones, C Fuller, C Hunter, C Sanders.

November 16th - Under 14s Vs St Austell Away

 St Austell U14 6pts
 Falmouth U14 32pts

Falmouth travelled to St Austell to play 'The Saints' on a pitch with such a
slope that it must be one of the foothills of the Cornish Alps.  As usual,
the Falmouth boys seemed half asleep for the first 10 minutes and it took 2
quick penalties from 'The Saints' to wake them up.  6-0 down, Falmouth
started to fight back and they were rewarded with a try from Tom Watts who
drove over the line in the corner after several attempts by the Falmouth
pack.  The blustery wind and sloping pitch made kicking very difficult
throughout the game and without the conversion Falmouth still trailed by one
point.  Despite some solid tackling and dogged defence by 'The Saints',
Falmouth then ran in two more tries through Mikey Jones and Jon Mailes to
 end the half 15-6.

Falmouth dominated the second half and only the persistent defence and some
committed tackling by St Austell prevented Falmouth from scoring more tries.
Mikey Jones ran in the first, this time ensuring he grounded it right under
the posts with uncharacteristic flamboyance after receiving some stick for
making Jack Reed's conversion attempt unnecessarily hard on his last one.
'The Saints' threatened to score on several occasions, but couldn't quite
make it to the line.  It was left to Grant Burrows to round off the match
with two piercing runs to seal the victory.

There was some good tackling from both teams during the game, but nothing
could match the ferocity of the tackle Angus MacKinnon made on his opposite
number as he took too long preparing to clear his line.  The impact was
heard right across the pitch and raised a collective gasp from the
supporters of both sides.  It seems that Angus took the comment from the
last match report about his return to the team 'adding some additional
 firepower' very seriously!

Next week Falmouth travel to Saltash.

November 9th - Under 14s Vs Redruth Away

Redruth U14  29pts
Falmouth U14 19pts

After changing the venue at the last minute, Redruth got off to a flying start with two quick tries in the first 10 minutes that left Falmouth reeling.  A third try came soon after following some strong running from the Redruth back row.  Well drilled and committed, the Redruth team stripped the ball from Falmouth at every opportunity in tackles and mauls and the Falmouth boys were often on the defensive.  ‘The Reds’ were on the verge of dominating the match when Mikey Jones broke from the half way line and ran in a much needed try almost under the posts.  This seemed to inspire Falmouth who began to play with renewed vigour and spirit.  Settling into their rugby, the visitors stopped Redruth having it all their own way.

The second half started well for Falmouth, but against the run of play Redruth capitalised on some handling errors and scored again.  Within 5 minutes, Falmouth replied through Jo Parry who drove over the line after some a good sequence of play with the forwards and backs working well together.  Play was then even for a long period until Grant Burrows made one of his trademark breaks down the middle of the pitch to bring Falmouth within 3 points.  In the driving wind and rain, the match could have gone either way at that stage, but a questionable try for Redruth in the last few minutes sealed the match.

Playing with new-found confidence and a strengthening team spirit, Falmouth proved again today that they have closed the gap on teams like Redruth and are becoming a force to be reckoned with. The boys have much to be proud of, but also much to work on in training if they are to continue to develop.

Welcome back Angus MacKinnon who added some additional firepower in his new role at fly half! Squad: A Bullock, H Wilson, C Sanders, T Opie, T Watts, M Tredget, J Phillips, C Hunter (capt), J Parry, H Howarth, J Reed, K Hamilton, A Mackinnon, G Burrows, J Mailes, M Jones, C Fuller

October 26th - Under 14s Vs Wadebridge Home

Falmouth u14s 26pts
Wadebridge u14s 17pts

After an aggressive, hard fought and, at times, ill-tempered match, Falmouth’s discipline and teamwork won the day.  In wet and slippery conditions, both teams battered each other during end-to-end play for the full 50 minutes.

Wadebridge started the match at full throttle and were rewarded with a try after only 4 minutes.  This early knock galvanised Falmouth and they replied 4 minutes later with the first of four excellent tries from Grant Burrows.  His second came 8 minutes later with a breakaway try after the forwards had snaffled the ball from one of the many furious rucks and mauls.  The second half started well for Wadebridge as they again caught Falmouth napping in the first couple of minutes with a good sequence from their backs to make it 12-12.  It was 10 minutes before Falmouth could reply and again it was Burrows who did the talking.  Wadebridge were now rattled and unfortunately their discipline suffered and tempers flared.  Falmouth capitalised on this and continued to play solid team rugby.  Wadebridge showed their true capabilities at times with some strong running, tackling and good defensive play.  They came within 2 points in the last 10 minutes but were unable to catch Falmouth, especially after Grant broke through for his fourth try.  Although there is only one name on the Falmouth score sheet, Grant could not have done it without the spirit and complete commitment from every player on his team.  It was undoubtedly the best Falmouth performance this season so far.

The pace of this match was unrelenting and, with both sides reduced to 14 men by injury and lack of replacements, by the end the boys on both sides knew they’d been in a scrap.  You can expect fireworks at the re-match away at Wadebridge later in the season.

October 19th - Under 14s Vs Camborne Home
Falmouth u14s 69pts
Camborne u14s 0pts

Camborne had no defence on Sunday against the power and speed of Falmouth.  To their credit, however, Camborne maintained their discipline and effort right up to the final whistle.   Unfortunately, the score line does not do justice to their competitive and spirited approach to the match.

Despite being a very convincing win for the Home side, Falmouth played scrappy rugby for long periods and relied on a succession of individual breakaway tries from Grant Burrows who notched another four, Jonny Mailes a hat-trickand Mikey Jones with a brace. Craig Hunter was rewarded for some aggressive forward work with a fine run to the lne. The best was saved for last when Charlie Sanders drove over in the final minute after an excellent spell of driving support play from the whole team.  This proved what the boys are capable of when they put their minds to it!  No one player stood out today as everyone gave 100%.  However, Craig Fuller deserves a mention as an inspiration to some of his teammates for his aggression and desire to make the ball his; and newcomer Josh Phillips who pulled off the tackle of the match.

October 5th - Under 14s Vs Liskeard/Looe Away

Liskeard/Looe u14s 7pts
Falmouth u14s 24pts

Falmouth followed up their win over Helston the previous week with a hard-fought victory at Liskeard on Sunday. Liskeard/Looe are a big and skilful side and the visitors had to keep pressure, concentration and determination up to subdue them. When Falmouth did relax at the beginning of the second half the home team ran in their only, but well-worked, try.

It was pleasing to see the Falmouth boys compete well in all the physical elements of the game. Tackling, rucking and mauling were more forceful when defending and four tries, two of them converted by Kieran Rodda, were fair testament to their determination in attack although this did appear in waves. Toby Cumins and Henry Howarth as well as the try scorers were notable powerhouses in attack. Mikey Jones ran well when given the chance and defended reliably.

Joseph Parry and newcomer Tom Watts, both forwards, scored the first two tries which were rewards for good effort from the Falmouth pack. Jon Mailes ran in a lovely try from centre to complete a promising but patchy first half. The second half saw a try apiece, Falmouth’s coming five minutes from time by Charlie Conchie with a sniping run from another set piece ball secured by the visitors.

Squad: T Watts, A Bullock, H Spargo, T Cumins, J Parry, C Sanders, J Choak, M Tredget, H Wilson, J Innard, C Conchie, J Reed, J Mailes (capt), G Burrows, M Jones, C Fuller, H Howarth, K Rodda

September 28th - Under 14s Vs Helston Away

Helston u14s 5pts
Falmouth u14s 31pts

Falmouth travelled to near rivals Helston on a morning better suited to cricket and duly recorded their first victory of the season.

Falmouth played the first half up the slope but strong rucking allowed Tom to crash over for a well deserved try, not converted. Falmouth were strong in the set piece winning several of the opposition scrums and lineouts and using the powerful centre combination of Grant Burrows and Jon Mailes to good effect. Tries followed from Grant, John & Henry converted by Jack showing good forward and back interplay. Falmouth went into the second half 26 points up. Helston came back briefly in the second half with a single unconverted try. However Falmouth again dominated the set piece and possession crossing the home team's tryline on several occasions without success before Grant crashed over from a well timed pass from Jack Reed who missed the conversion. Josh, Tom, Toby, Alex and Charlie stood out in the forwards. Mathew made one fantastic tackle.

Grant & John were formidable in the backs making several runs. Discipline was good in the face of a flurry of questionable penalties. The victory was resounding and thoroughly deserved. Helston were bigger than Falmouth man for man with an impressive squad and some backs at least as fast as the visitors' best.

In the end the better team won out. but there are some areas Falmouth need desperately to improve - for example, they dropped the ball twice from Helston kick offs.

September 2008 - Under 14s training and matches

Message from Kim -
We have a training match away at Redruth on 14th Sept. therefore it is imperative that everybody comes to training on Friday 5th 6.30, Sunday 7th 9.45 and NOTE SATURDAY 13th 9.45am (not Friday due to Tall Ships Fri eve). If you can't make any of these please let one of the coaches know.

Under 13's Player of the Season

Craig Hunter receives his trophy from coach Kim Conchie as ‘Coaches’ Player of the Season 2007-8 ‘ for Falmouth Rugby Club Under 13s.

Craig Hunter receives his trophy from coach Kim Conchie as
‘Coaches’ Player of the Season 2007-8 ‘ for Falmouth Rugby Club Under 13s.

‘Craig was a worthy winner of the Under 13 trophy. He improved immensely during the season and was a pleasure to coach because he is keen and committed and he puts into practice during matches what he has learnt on the training pitch’ enthused under 13 coach Kim Conchie. ‘He was a key player in what was a successful season. We reached the semi-final of the County Cup losing to a strong Penzance/Newlyn side. In other matches in Cornwall we lost only to Truro and Redruth. Our aim is to catch them next season and to keep ahead of the likes of Wadebridge and Bude who are breathing down our necks. We did get an end of season thumping from the touring Blackheath team which highlighted some of the areas we need to improve next season. I am going to do a lot of extra training work on our defensive play, particularly tackling and rucking. We tend to accept the role of underdogs too readily on occasions when I want the guys to step up to the plate. A bit more grit, like Craig demonstrates, will be required to be winners as under 14s ’ he continued.

Craig, a pupil at Falmouth School, said, ‘It’s great to get this award. I really enjoyed playing rugby for Falmouth. I broke my arm at school – not playing rugby - but as soon as that is fixed I will be getting fit for next season which I think’s going to be a lot of fun’.

Training for next season starts on Friday 8th August at 6.30pm at The Recreation Ground. All boys starting school year 9 in September are very welcome to try their hand whether they have played rugby before or not. Just turn up or contact Kim Conchie on 01326 214974 for more information.

Sunday March 16th - Falmouth vs Penzance/Newlyn Under 13's
Cornwall u13s Rugby Cup semi-final

Penzance/Newlyn u13s 32pts Falmouth u13s =0pts

Falmouth came up against a strong Pirates side on Sunday who scored tries at fairly regular intervals - three in each half - after periods of  dogged defence by the visitors who were starved of possession for much of the game. In many ways this was the sort of tough match that the Falmouth boys would benefit from playing more often. It was a benchmark of Cornish u13 rugby and Falmouth fell only just short on this occasion. If the Falmouth tackling had held up against the Penzance star, Sam, (like Tarzan, nobody needs to know his other name such is the awe he inspires) and if there had been a greater vision in attack to use the spaces on the fringes of the big pitch the scoreline would have been narrower. As it was this was no disgrace against the best side in Cornwall and Falmouth will redouble efforts to run them closer next time.

For the visitors everybody played their part in stemming the relentless flow of Penzance attacks. With the limited possession Falmouth did secure the forwards battled bravely and there were threatening runs from Grant Burrows, Charlie Conchie and Jack Reed but no points for their efforts.

Squad: K Rodda, H Howarth, G Vincent, R Dunne, C Fuller, M Jones, G Burrows, C Conchie, O Stick, H Wilson, W James, T Cumins, H Spargo, M Tredget, C Sanders, C Hunter, J Parry, J Mailes

Sunday March 9th - Falmouth vs St. Ives Under 13's Away

St. Ives u13s 0pts Falmouth u13s =38pts

Falmouth dispatched visitors St Ives by completely blocking them out in another fine display on Sunday.

Grant  Burrows scored first converted by Kieran Rodda, next were 3 tries scored by Angus Mackinnon, 2 were converted by Kieran Rodda which brought the score to 26 nil. In the second half Grant scored a second try converted by Rodda and the last try was scored by Henry Howath but was not converted making the final scvore 38 - nil. Henry  Howarth was man of the match.

Following this performance  the Falmouth team can look forward with confidence to their cup semi-final at Penzance&Newlyn next Sunday. Kick off is 11am at Mennaye Field, Penzance. Every player will need to be at their best, their fittest and their most committed to overcome a Penzance team that has a strong reputation. But Falmouth must go and play from the starting whistle without being overawed. The reward would be a final against old rivals Redruth who will undoubtedly see off Camborne on Sunday.

Squad: K Rodda, H Howarth, G Vincent, R Dunne, C Fuller, M Jones, G Burrows, C Conchie, O Stick, H Wilson, W James, T Cumins, H Spargo, M Tredget, C Sanders, C Hunter, J Parry, J Mailes

Under 13's News

It almost seems like an indication of the success of Falmouth's season at this age group that they have been drawn away at Penzance/Newlyn in the semi-final of the County Cup on 16th March and are preparing for victory.

All the boys have been asked to redouble their efforts to get fit and to be on top form for the big occasion. Intensive training has been scheduled for Friday and Sunday. A series of forwards and backs moves are being planned to complement the team's natural attacking flair. Their success so far has come from their ability to run at the opposition from all areas of the field and to tackle and ruck when in defence.

The squad will be selected after training on Sunday and fitness tests next week.

Sunday February 24th- Falmouth vs St. Austell Under 13's Away

St. Austell u13s 0pts Falmouth u13s =50pts

Falmouth booked their berth in the semi-final of the County u13 Cup with a storming victory at St Austell on Sunday. As with recent performances, skills were demonstrated in both attack and defence by all players in the visiting side.

The hosts defended doggedly in the first half and kept the score to 29-0 but after the interval the possession and straight running of the Falmouth back row and three-quarters proved too much to handle.

Tries were scored by Man of the Match, George Vincent, Michael Jones, Jon Mailes (2), Grant Burrows (2), Jack Reed and Ruairi Dunne. Five of these wer converted by Kieran Rodda.

The semi-finals will take place on 16th March. The draw has not yet taken place  so Falmouth don't know whether they will face Redruth, Camborne or Penzance & Newlyn.

Squad: K Rodda, H Howarth, G Vincent, R Dunne, C Fuller, M Jones, G Burrows, C Conchie, O Stick, H Wilson, W James, T Cumins, H Spargo, M Tredget, C Sanders, C Hunter, J Parry, J Mailes

Sunday February 10th- Falmouth vs Camborne Under 13's at Home

Camborne u13s 0pts Falmouth u13s =78pts

In any sporting career there are going to be days you wish to forget; and this was one of those for the Camborne boys who were comprehensively outplayed in every department. Surprising though it may sound from the scoreline, Camborne never gave up and nearly snatched a late consolation try for their efforts.

The fact that they were denied was down to good cover defence by the home team's backs to add to the array of skills they displayed in the more frequent attacks. Each of the home team played their part in an exciting if one-sided affair. Captain Charlie Conchie and Grant Burrows both bagged hat-tricks, Jon Mailes notched an excellent pair and Mikey Jones, Joseph Parry, Craig Hunter and Kieran Rodda contributed one apiece. Rodda also converted nine of the touchdowns. Man of the Match Ruairi Dunne was another notable contributor both in attack and defence.

Tackling, passing and rucking by the home side improved as their confidence grew which are developments they will be hoping to take into more stretching games o the horizon.

Sunday February 3rd - Falmouth vs Redruth Under 13's at Home

Redruth u13s 10pts Falmouth u13s 5pts

Redruth are one of the toughest outfits in the county so when they come calling their hosts had better be on top form. Falmouth almost matched them for intensity and effort on Sunday and could have snatched victory at the death. Conditions were terrible at The Recreation Ground but this did not prevent a great game of rugby being played by both sides. Redruth scored their two tries in the first half and did establish some dominance. But in the second period Falmouth stuck to their task and pulled one back from their excellent captain for the day, Jon Mailes. He and man of the match Criag Hunter made a good impression throughout the match. All the forwards played well complemented by some sharp moves and strong tackling from the backs. Next week Falmouth visit Bodmin who they bested at home before Christmas so will be hoping to regain their winning ways. Squad - as last week.

Sunday January 27th - Falmouth vs Wadebridge Under 13's Away

Wadebridge u13s 24pts Falmouth u13s 24pts

For the second consecutive Sunday Falmouth travelled north in search of spoils but were contained by a strong and committed herd of Camels who matched the visitors for ability and confidence.

Falmouth's captain for the day, Angus Mackinnon, won the toss and elected to play up the slope.  Against the run of play, it was the home team which took the lead after five minutes of end to end rugby and Falmouth knew there was a serious game on. Grant Burrows scored a breakaway try converted by Kieran Rodda; and Jon Mailes went over after a forward effort to keep Falmouth in the hunt. Half time saw a narrow lead to Falmouth and expectations that, down the hill, the visitors could wrap another away victory. But, again, Wadebridge started the stronger and drew level. A tight half of good rugby from both sides resulted in just one further try apiece, Grant Burrows nabbing his second converted by George Leakey for the away team. At the death, Falmouth surged over the Wadebridge tryline and claimed a try but the referee ruled no touchdown.

This was a fantastic game of rugby played with endeavour and good spirit in all quarters. Several Falmouth players impressed: Caspar Fuller, George Vincent and Henry Howarth playing above themselves and running Mikey Jones close for man of the match honours.

The quarter-final round of the County Cup has taken place. Falmouth are drawn away to either St Austell or Launceston on 17th February and will have high hopes of progressing to a semi-final against either of these.

Squad: Caspar Fuller, George Leakey, George Vincent, Matthew Tredget, Mikey Jones (man of the match), Zac Maunder, Grant Burrows, Kieran Rodda, Oliver Stick, Angus Mackinnon (captain), Joseph Parry, Craig Hunter, Jon Mailes, Charlie Sanders, Toby Cumins, Harry Spargo, Hamish Wilson, Henry Howarth.

Sunday January 20th - Falmouth vs Bude Under 13's Away in Cornwall Cup

Bude u13s 19pts Falmouth u13s 29pts

Falmouth took the Atlantic Highway to play their opening County u13 Cup fixture at Bude and came away with a satisfying victory. The visiting forwards were particularly dominant in ruck and maul and put in a much-improved display in the lineout to secure the lion's share of possession which they converted into five well-worked tries. Jon Mailes making his debut for Falmouth scored the first after 8 minutes which was converted by Kieran Rodda. Bude drew level midway through the half with a fine individual effort before Angus Mackinnon restored Falmouth's lead just before half-time.

The half-time team talk urged the visitors to impose themselves straightaway and put some further points on the board within 5 minutes. Mikey Jones caught the ball from the kick off and sprinted 60 yards to oblige within 30 seconds. This score put some space between the teams. Thereafter Grant Burrows, reverting to his preferred position in the forwards, ran in 2 fine tries and Bude kept in the game by poaching 2 of their own against the run of play. The draw for the next round takes place in early February. Falmouth will be hoping to avoid Redruth and Truro - the two teams who have beaten them this season.

Squad: Kieran Rodda, Caspar Fuller, George Vincent, Grant Burrows Mikey Jones, Jack Reed (Captain and joint man of the match), Oliver Stick, Angus Mackinnon, Joseph Parry, Jon Mailes, Matthew Tredget, Charlie Sanders, Toby Cumins, Harry Spargo (joint man of the match), Hamish Wilson, Craig Hunter, Freddie Tomlinson, Zac Maunder.
